🔍 Project Introduction

This Power BI dashboard project explores the relationship between building energy consumption and environmental conditions using a rich, hourly dataset covering two commercial buildings from 2016 to 2019. The dataset includes detailed weather variables such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, solar irradiance, and degree days, along with energy usage (kWh) and holiday indicators. The goal of this project is to uncover insights into how energy demand fluctuates over time, how external weather factors influence consumption, and how buildings respond to seasonal and environmental changes. Through three structured dashboards—Energy Overview, Weather Trends, and Weather Impact on Energy—this analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of building performance and energy efficiency patterns.

📊 Dashboard 1: Energy Consumption Overview

Focus: Understand overall and temporal patterns in building energy use.

Questions:

  1. What is the total energy consumption by year and by building (A vs B)?
  2. How does hourly, daily, and monthly energy usage vary across time?
  3. Which months and hours of the day have the highest and lowest energy consumption?
  4. What is the weekday vs weekend energy usage pattern?
  5. How does the holiday vs non-holiday energy consumption differ?

📈 Visuals: line charts, stacked bar charts (A vs B), heatmaps (hour vs day), card KPIs, slicers for time filters.

🌤 Dashboard 2: Weather Conditions & Environmental Trends

Focus: Analyze the weather patterns that could affect building performance.

Questions:

  1. What are the average, minimum, and maximum temperatures across months and seasons?
  2. How does solar irradiance vary throughout the year?
  3. What is the distribution of humidity and precipitation over time?
  4. Are there extreme weather events (very hot/cold, heavy rain) and when do they occur?
  5. How do Cooling Degree Days (CDD) and Heating Degree Days (HDD) trend seasonally?

📈 Visuals: line charts for time-series weather, boxplots, scatter plots, rain cloud charts, seasonal slicers.

Dashboard 3: Weather Impact on Energy Use

Focus: Correlate energy usage with environmental variables.

Questions:

  1. Is there a correlation between temperature and energy consumption (especially heating/cooling periods)?
  2. How does solar irradiance affect energy usage across seasons?
  3. Do higher humidity levels lead to increased energy consumption (e.g., HVAC load)?
  4. What is the impact of HDD/CDD on daily energy usage?
  5. On extreme weather days, how much more or less energy is consumed compared to average?

📈 Visuals: scatter plots with trend lines, dual-axis line graphs, matrix comparisons, DAX-calculated correlation coefficients.
